Why kite in France
France is a kite destination in its own right, often overlooked by its own residents. Languedoc-Roussillon is the national mecca: Leucate (French kite capital, its Franqui swept by the tramontane 100+ days/year), Gruissan, Port-Saint-Louis, La Palme. The Atlantic coast offers La Tranche-sur-Mer (iconic Vendée spot), Quiberon, Penthièvre, Oléron Island. Brittany has spots for hardened riders (Carnac, Erdeven). The Riviera: Hyères, Presqu'île de Giens, Almanarre. And Corsica with its wild spots: Santa Giulia, Portiglioli, Bonifacio, Aleria.
Why kite in France
- Leucate: 100+ days of tramontane per year, mature kite infrastructure.
- Presqu'île de Giens: reliable Mediterranean thermal in summer, all levels.
- Atlantic: waves, long sessions, wave-kite culture.
- Corsica: stunning landscapes, varied spots, few people.
- French kite roadtrip: combine several regions over 2-3 weeks.
- No flight needed from most of Europe.
Kite season in France — when to go
Main season April to October. Languedoc: tramontane year-round, peak summer. Corsica and Riviera: July-August high season, but reliable wind from May to October. Atlantic: spring and autumn bring the best swells. Winter: kitable with tramontane in Languedoc, elsewhere needs a thick wetsuit.
